On Saturday, March 17th 2007 my good friend and dive buddy Kawika Chetron set out alone to take pictures near Cape Mendocino, California. He didn't return to the dock that night. An extensive search by the Coast Guard was unable to locate him, finding only his boat the Rapture (above) anchored forlornly off the coast. I can't even begin to describe what a huge loss this is but perhaps his pictures speak louder than any small words I can offer. I hope someday I can forgive him for going off alone and leaving us to wonder what happened. I suppose in the end an explorer just has to go out. It's their nature. Many thanks to the Coast Guard, the diving community in Eureka and everyone else who helped in the search effort. It's nice to know that there are brave people who have your back when you venture out to sea. Clinton Bauder |
